Research/teaching areas: journalism, photojournalism, media law and mass media theory. He has also taught computer graphics, layout and design, and web publishing. He was a free-lance photojournalist working with United Press International and has had photographs appear in the Dallas Times-Herald, Washington Post, Ft. Worth Star-Telegram, theCommission, St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Chronicle of Higher Education, Christianity Today and Chrisma . Mr. Carey was editor-in-chief for Missions Today magazine. He currently serves as one of the coordinators for the annual Southwestern Photojournalism Conference and on the board of directors of Christians in Photojournalism.

After earning a BFA in Drama in 1983 from Sam Houston State University, Mr. Lahaie worked as Theater Manager for the Keller Theater in Giessen, Germany (a part of the US Army Entertainment Program in Europe). He was later promoted to Entertainment Director for the Giessen Military Community, which included the responsibilities of Artistic Director for the Keller Theater. In that capacity, Scot has participated as either director, designer, or actor in over 50 shows. Scot returned to the US in 1995 to pursue graduate studies in Theater Arts at Baylor, where he earned a Masters of Arts in Theater History and Dramatic Criticism with thesis in 1995 and a Masters of Fine Arts in Stage Directing in 2000. Professor Lahaie joined Gardner-Webb University as Director of Theater in January 2003.

Dr. Lawrence's areas of expertise include video production, film, scriptwriting, and theater.

Dr. Lawrence worked a number of years in the Los Angeles film and television industries. He is a member of both the Writers and Directors Guilds. He has written several 2-hour movies for network television: "Child of Glass" and "The Sky Trap" for Walt Disney Productions and "Missing Children: A Mother's Story" for Warner Bros./CBS. He also wrote and directed "Truce In The Forest," a multiple-award-winning Christmas film. He has also been active in the theater, directing plays for the Downey Civic Light Opera, Whittier-La Mirada Civic Light Opera, Burbank Civic Light Opera, and Asheville Community Theatre. Of special note, Dr. Lawrence has just published his third novel, "The Surrounding."

Christopher Keene

Mr. Keene worked for several years in the Los Angeles area as a makeup artist and prop master. He was a makeup artist for Knott’s Berry Farm’s Scream Team and a prosthetic and prop sculptor for Six Flag’s Magic Mountain. His credits also include makeup for music videos by Danny Elfman and the Talking Heads. In 1994, he relocated to Nashville where he toured with the missionary mime team "All The World’s A Stage." While in Nashville, he also worked as head of the makeup department for Opryland USA’s Howl-0-ween, as well as a makeup artist for the Nashville Opera’s Aida. He also designed props for the Tennessee Repertory Theatre and the Nashville Shakespeare Festival. He has also worked on "La Traviata" for the Piedmont Opera, "Henry IV, part one' for the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival and " Having Our Say' for the Little Theatre of Winston-Salem. Chris joined the faculty of GWU in 2002.

Professor Dickens' expertise in speech pathology supports our liberal arts core in speech and forensics. She has also studied at The University of the Philippines in Manila. Her most recent university teaching experience before coming to Gardner-Webb University in Fall 2002 was at Texas Christian University in Ft. Worth, Texas for twelve years. Professor Dickens continues to pursue her special interests in clinical areas of voice production, care of the speaking and singing voice, and neurogenic communication disorders.
